Fully Synthetic Engine Oils: What are the Differences?

Engine oils come in a number of compositions and contain a number of grades, In fact, in our previous article, we looked at the various key functions of engine oils. You might already know that synthetic oils typically exceed conventional oils in performance, with this usually highlighted in the price as synthetic oils are more expensive than their conventional cousins. But as we investigate further into the area of synthetic oils you might not know the difference between synthetic blend oils and full synthetic oils. This article will not  only explain the difference, but the benefits of each formulation.

So what does synthetic mean?

While a traditional mineral or conventional oil are formulated from refined crude oil, synthetic oils are made up of chemical compounds artificially made by breaking down and then rebuilding petroleum molecules. This creates an oil that contains specific molecules that are developed to provide optimal lubrication properties.

Types of synthetic oil

There are 2 types of synthetic oil: synthetic blend oil and full synthetic oil. Here are the key differences between both:

Synthetic blend oil is a mix of conventional motor oils and synthetic base stocks. Due to this mix, the synthetic base stock will help to provide a greater performance and protection than you would by using a conventional oil on its own

Full synthetic oil uses a synthetic base stock that is then mixed with an assortment of additives that improve the performance of the oil. While all synthetics on the market may offer a higher level of protection than conventional or synthetics blends, not all synthetics are created equal. All synthetic brands use a combination of high-performance fluids and additives. How these formulations come together results in various protection levels and attributes.

To determine which synthetic is best for you, consider what type of protection you need. Is it better wear protection? Cleaner engine? Durability?

Why does synthetics differ in performance?

There are a number of reasons why synthetics differ in performance and protection but the fundamental reason is that not all synthetics are developed the same way. They can contain numerous different types and mixtures of base oils and additives. Even slight alterations can have a major effect on performance. For example, add a bit more of one additive and you get better protection, but you might lose some performance or cleanliness. Cut back on this additive and you get better performance at high temperatures, but the cold-weather start-up may be reduced.  So taking this into account, what is your best approach? The best method is to look for a full synthetic product that is developed for optimal performance in every area. That way, you’re not finding reductions in one area just to get allow better performance in another. You should also look to select synthetic oils that use high-quality base stocks which will ensure increased performance and protection.  Most importantly, you should always consult your owners manual or speak to a mechanic in regards to the right engine oil for your vehicle
