AdBlue

Overview

AdBlue® is the VDA registered trademark for Aqueous Urea Solution 32.5% that is used with the Selective Catalytic Reduction system (SCR) to reduce emissions of oxides of nitrogen from the exhaust of diesel vehicles.

Product sizes available:

Description

Uses

  • AdBlue® is a 32.5% solution of high-purity urea in de-mineralised water. It is clear, non-toxic, and safe to handle.
  • It does not explode, burn, or harm the environment.
  • AdBlue® falls under the minimum-risk category for transportable fluids.
  • It is not a fuel or a fuel additive and must be stored in a dedicated tank in your vehicle. You refill it in the same way as you refuel diesel.
  • When used with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), AdBlue® helps improve fuel efficiency and reduce CO₂ emissions compared with other emission-control systems. All major European and North American truck manufacturers currently produce SCR-equipped models.

Characteristics

  • AdBlue® is a clear, odourless liquid that remains non-toxic and safe to handle.

  • It has a typical specific gravity (SG) of 1.09 and a recommended shelf life of 12 months.

  • It freezes at –11 °C and begins to hydrolyse at about 30 °C.

  • When AdBlue® dries, it crystallises and causes corrosion, so clean any spills immediately with water.

  • It corrodes iron, copper, bronze, and some aluminium alloys.

  • Always use spill-free systems to reduce the risk of contamination and corrosion.

SCR Technology

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is an after-treatment technology that uses an aqueous urea solution known as AdBlue® to reduce NOx emissions. All major diesel vehicle manufacturers use this technology to meet new NOx emission legislation (check your vehicle handbook to confirm if your vehicle requires AdBlue®). SCR offers the most cost-effective way to meet NOx emission standards.

The SCR system includes the SCR catalyst, AdBlue® injection unit, AdBlue® tank, and AdBlue® dosing control unit. The system injects AdBlue® into the exhaust pipe, ahead of the SCR catalyst and downstream of the engine. Heat from the exhaust converts AdBlue® into ammonia and CO₂. Inside the catalyst, the ammonia reacts with NOx in the exhaust, turning the harmful gases into harmless nitrogen and water.

Application

To comply with Euro 6 regulations, the majority of new diesel-powered vehicles built since 2016 use SCR technology. This system injects small amounts of AdBlue© into the car’s exhaust gases. As the AdBlue© mixes with the exhaust emissions, it breaks down harmful mono-nitrogen oxides in the diesel exhaust, producing harmless nitrogen and oxygen instead.

In fact, this technology has been used in buses and heavy-duty trucks for many years. Because of this long history of use, its success is well proven, and today its reliability is stronger than ever.

Benefits

  • Reduces mono-nitrogen oxide emissions
  • Cost-effective and safe
  • For Euro 4,5 and 6 diesel engines
  • All manufacturer approvals
